The Volvo 240 price floor in my area is about $700. I found an 1988 244GL (wagon) with a replaced front end from an older 240(quad round headlights). It apparently needs brakes but otherwise runs ok. The price is $300. Brake pads and rotors are cheap as dirt and it also needs new studs and lugs.

Pros:aside from the yellow hood and driver fender and some finish issues (needs new corner light) the dark blue body is in good shape. No notable rust on the outside. Interior is in good shape, but dirty. that was my first clue that the car was newer than the ~1980 front. Get to check off proper brick wagon ownership off the auto bucket list.

Cons: God knows what’s really wrong with it. 200+k miles. Auto :(

This would be a flip. $300 + $50 in parts and X number of mechanic rage fits is totally worth $700 right?

Tell me why I shouldn’t.

It's harder than it looks to flip cars and it will cost more than you are probably expecting

Its $300. That’s your answer.

Maybe you could spend slightly more on a slightly better one, do a slightly better job fixing it, and get more profit. It’s easier to lose money when scraping the bottom of the barrel than it is when operating a little higher.

Because after you’re done working on it you will have to find a buyer for an old Volvo wagon with swapped body work? That might not be as easy and quick as you would like. Also, you would only be working with a $400 margin so if anything serious pops up it could eat your entire margin.

The $7-800 ones are basically in the same shape

If you can afford a $300+ learning experience, I’d say go for it.

Bleeding 2-piston Girling calipers, for one. Three bleeder screws. All fill about the same time.

Wasn’t planning on bleeding the system. I’ll give it a better look in a few days.

I’ve had two Volvo 240s - an 88 and an 89. Brakes were cheap but time consuming as hell. If you’re going to do rotors expect to have to bleed at least one caliper up front.
